Common Reaction

OH dear, that name. Uh Huh Her may be meant as a tribute to a PJ Harvey album.

Butit ranks with Wa Wa Nee, Koo De Tah and Goo Goo Dolls as a band you can't discuss without cringing.

That's a shame, because the Los Angeles duo, female singer-keyboardists who are supported on this album with guitars and drums, present superb synth-pop that deserves a big audience.

It's a mark of their talent that their debut album is produced by Al Clay, whose credits include Blur, Pink, Stereophonics and the Boo Radleys.

On Not a Love Song and Wait Another Day Uh Huh Her serve up exquisite vocals and dance beats that merge the rich harmonies of the Corrs and the Delays with the deep, burning moods of Lush and Silversun Pickups.

Explode breathes a sleepy sexiness and Everyone soars with the help of a plunking harp - synthesised, doubtlessly.

Away From Here oozes the languid romance of the Cardigans, while Dance With Me packs the punch of the Veronicas. An album that bursts with vitality and talent.

Bill Bruford's vocation is like his drumming sound -- inimitable. Known for his ringing metal snare drum, nippy cymbal turn, and hang for complex time signatures, a young Bruford came to prominence in the late '60s with Yes. The drummer completed his British art stone trilogy by in short connectedness Genesis in the 1970s and outgo a quarter-century with King Crimson through the belated '90s. In 'tween King Crimson dates, Bruford lED a glaring self-titled jazz fusion solo band from 1978 to 1980 that featured guitar player Allan Holdsworth, bassist Jeff Berlin, and keyboardist Dave Stewart. And tied as he leads his illusionist jazz band, Bill Bruford's Earthworks, he maintains a life history as a academic term drummer (with artists like guitarists Al DiMeola and David Torn, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and keyboardist Patrick Moraz).

During one of King Crimson drawing card Robert Fripp's several lineup-shifting hiatuses in Bruford's 1972-1997 land tenure, the drummer formed his self-titled Earthworks dance band in 1986. On its 1987 Earthworks debut album, Bruford often used electric Simmons drums to contrast acoustic french horn players Iain Ballamy and Django Bates and erect bassist Mick Hutton, achieving the polar of the monetary standard card where drums ar the entirely acoustic instrument. Subsequent releases like 1989's Dig out? and 1991's All Heaven Broke Loose continued this forward-thinking trend, blend acoustic and electric instrumentation and loose words ideology with unequivocal undertones. But by 1993's live Stamping Ground, Bruford had replaced Hutton with electric/acoustic bassist Tim Harries and was using keyboard-pitched electrical chordal drums, the combined resultant role macrocosm a more hefty and melville Weston Fuller good.

Bruford continued recording and touring with King Crimson through 1997, releasing the Earthworks compiling Heavenly Bodies just as he depart the venerable john Rock isthmus with which he'd had his longest land tenure. It would evidence to be a transitional year, as Bruford recorded a idle words chamber trio solo CD called If Summer Had Its Ghosts with legendary idle words figures Ralph Towner (guitar/piano) and Eddie Gomez (acoustic bass part). Between explorative electrical recordings with bassist and colleague King Crimson alum Tony Levin, Bruford kept Earthworks finisher to the chamber jazz modal value on the 1999 CD A Part and Yet Apart. Likewise, the lineup of Bruford, saxist Patrick Clahar, piano player Steve Hamilton, and bassist Mark Hodgson started the new millenary with the 2001 CD The Sound of Surprise, an spectacular blend of jazz tradition and forward-thinking changeover.

Tatum O'Neal arrested on drug charge

By Edith Honan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar-winner Tatum O'Neal, the former
child actress who chronicled her struggles with addiction in a
2004 memoir, has been arrested on suspicion of buying drugs on
the streets of New York City.

A judge released her on her own recognizance on Monday
after she spent the night in jail and she was ordered to return
on July 28. O'Neal, 44, appeared without makeup, her hair tied
into a messy bun, wearing a black tank top and black pants.

O'Neal, who was charged with criminal possession of a
controlled substance, rejected a deal that would have sentenced
her to a two-day drug treatment program in exchange for a
guilty plea for disorderly conduct, prosecutors said.

She will enter a plea at her July court date.

The New York Daily News reported she was caught buying
crack cocaine from a homeless street vendor on Sunday night
three blocks from her home.

A police spokesman said she was seen buying a controlled
substance from a man in Manhattan's Lower East Side, once a
crime-infested neighborhood that has become trendy.

O'Neal's publicist declined to comment and her lawyer left
the courtroom without speaking to reporters.

The Daily News, citing unnamed police sources, reported
that O'Neal first told police she was "doing research for a
part" and changed her story after police searched her and found
a bag of crack, a bag of regular cocaine and an unused crack
pipe.

50 Cent ordered to forfeit guns

Rapper 50 Cent has been ordered to surrender any guns he might have after a judge issued a temporary restraining order requested by the rapper's ex-girlfriend, lawyers said.

A lawyer for the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, said he would contest the order and that 50 Cent did not have guns or access to guns.

"To my knowledge, he has no guns," said lawyer Brett Kimmel.

The order bars 50 Cent from being in contact with Shaniqua Tompkins, the mother of his 10-year-old son, without the court's permission, lawyers said.

50 Cent and Tompkins have been locked in a legal fight over money. Tompkins has argued that she is entitled to half of 50 Cent's estate, based on an oral agreement.

The dispute escalated last month after a fire destroyed the rapper's $US2.4 million Long Island home, where Tompkins lived with their son.

Police said they were investigating the fire as suspicious.

The Stamford, Connecticut-based rapper has denied any involvement in the fire and separately filed a $US20 million defamation lawsuit in a Connecticut Superior Court against Tompkins for statements she made to the media.

"It's completely baseless and it's retaliatory," Tompkins' lawyer, Paul Catsandonis, said of the defamation suit.

"It's nothing more than an attempt to rehabilitate his image."

Since his debut album in 2003, 50 Cent has built a business with a record label, a clothing and footwear line, ringtones and video games.

He has also starred in a movie based on his life, Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Oscar nominee Julie Christie weds

'Doctor Zhivago' star Julie Christie has wed her long-term partner in India.
CBS News correspondent Sheila MacVicar reported that the 66-year-old secretly wed journalist Duncan Campbell in a small, private ceremony.
Christie's brother Clive Christie confirmed to the UK's Daily Mail newspaper that the wedding had taken place, but that he did not attend the event two months ago.
The actress once said: "I don't see any reason for getting married unless you're religious, which I'm not."
Commenting on the newly married couple, columnist Neal Sean said: "He's very studious, very educated and she's always been about broadening her mind, her appeal, that sort of stuff."
Christie is among the nominees for this month's Oscars for her return to cinema screens as an Alzheimer's sufferer in the film 'Away from Her'.
She has already won Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and National Board of Review awards in the US for her performance.
The actress previously won an Oscar for the John Schlesinger film 'Darling', before turning her back on Hollywood in the 1970s.
"Julie Christie is something of a recluse, not just from life itself but basically from the whole sort of Hollywood shebang as it were," said columnist Sean.
